| Role Play Guideline Many of The House of Night community have an interest in Role Play. Nicknamed "RP", Role Play is a sort of Story. It is a Story that is started by one person with the intent to have many others jump in and further the story with different characters. There are several ways to Role Play;
In a "first person" View, where you write your post as if you were explaining your character's actions.
In "second or third person" View, you are writing on how a Character is acting. For a story to run well, you want to write as if you are describing your Character.
Example: "Late at night, as the sun set behind the far hill, Alex shifted in his seat hidden behind a building."
You want to give a descriptive post that follows the topic or adds to the topic. Please also refrian from typing with "text speak" or "slang". Try to spell out each word. Such as " wat u up 2?" It should instead look like "What are you up to?"
Text speak or net speak are not to be posted. If you do not use it in Essays, you should not use it here. --------------------------------------------
Starting your Story After reading the above post, you decided you had a story in mind to create. You want to cover these few things;
The back ground story The Scene Your own Character action If needed, OOC (Out of Character) information on what is to be expected
I will give you a little information on each of the above.
The back ground story- You want to give a little imformation on what happened to lead up to the point of the post. Such as explaining a little about, say, the "hotel" that Vampires have run. It helps to set the mood for your story.
The Scene- You want to explain where your story takes place, give some details about it.
Your own character action- You need to start the story off, so you get to post your own action so others can follow suit. --------------------------------------------
Clarity There`s nothing that pauses a Roleplay more, than illiteracy.
No one`s perfect (Not even me- shocker of shockers) we all make typos, and we all stumble over the spelling of a word or two. That`s why it`s super important to edit your posts, read them after you`re finished, just to be sure, that to the best of your knowledge, every i is dotted and every T is crossed. There`s nothing like a typo or a misspelled word in a post to make a reader pause and completely ruin the rhythm you`re creating in your writing. Try your best to be fluent in proper English.
Another thing relating to post clarity that it is important to remember, is that not everyone is seeing the picture in your head, you have to show it to them! You can easily say you sit down, and everyone knows you`ve seated yourself, but if you don`t tell them how, you just kind of become a blank spot in their mind. It`s easy for you to know you`ve sat down, crossed your legs, and placed your hand in your lap, but unless you tell them that, they won`t know.
Make sure that you make it clear where you are, and what you`re doing. If you don`t, there can be a great deal of confusion when another player is trying to interact with you thinking you`re doing one thing, when in fact you`re doing the complete other.
So make sure you`re thorough, and make sure you`re clear. --------------------------------------------
Development One thing it is imperative you watch for when you`re engaging in Roleplay, is to be sure you`re being true to your character. You`ve written them a bio, you know who they are, now stick with them!
By the time you start using your character, you should know them as well as you know your best friend- better even! You should know what their favorite food is, what their favorite colour is, and how they`ll respond to different scenarios. I`m not telling you to go out and write a million different short stories just to test your knowledge (Though I wouldn`t discourage it.) , just make sure you know who your character is.
The second part to this, is to stick to it. Sometimes your character`s reaction to something may not be your own, or how you might want them to react, but remember at the base of every vampire character- lies in essence a human mind. With flaws and eccentricities just like you. I don`t want to see a single `perfect` character anywhere on this board. You have flaws, don`t deny them, write them- this is going to create more tension in your threads, and keep them interesting.
This relates in Battle RP`s as well, remember that you`re not a god, and you`re not all powerful, and it`s okay for your character to lose a fight. It`s not about winning- it`s about making everyone want to check your RP thread daily just to see what`s going on!
Make it real, that means flaws, and eccentricities. There`s nothing interesting about perfection.--------------------------------------------
Realism One of the greatest keys to creating readable, and enjoyable RP, is to keep it real, create a scene your readers can actually close their eyes and find themselves within.
One particular key to doing so, is by accounting for all of your character`s senses. A lot of new RP-ers tend to focus on sight, one of our most dominant senses, but an experienced, skilled writer knows that all senses are important. It`s great to let a reader know what the scene looks like, so they can picture it, be as detailed as you like- but don`t forget the rest of your character`s senses.
The key to drawing your readers straight into the world in your mind, is to share with them all things your character is feeling. You have five senses, take advantage of them! Don`t forget to let us know what the area, or the opposite character smells like, what your character hears in the sounds around them.. Is the place warm or cold? The walls you brush your hand against, are they rough or smooth? All of these things are imperative to creating an interesting, mind consuming Roleplay, don`t forget your senses! --------------------------------------------
The Lingo Finding the Lingo that those of us who have been doing this awhile a little confusing? Well kiddos, here`s your RP-English dictionary. Enjoy!
*The "boss" or "Host" of the roleplay is the creator. They have created the rules, forum, and (possibly) the scenario. If you don`t like their rules, then you may have to leave and try a different thread.
*Basic Roleplaying keywords are:
-RP: Roleplay
-OOC: Out of Character
-IC: In Character
-pp: Power-playing (Which refers to trying to control other people`s characters.)
-gm: God-modding (Which refers to trying to have a "perfect character" or making an attempt to control another character`s reaction to you.)
-Literate: A very good roleplayer who shows that they are able to properly use grammar, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, etc...
-Semi-Lit: A decent roleplayer who has an "OK" grasp of grammar, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, etc.
-Illiterate: A terrible roleplayer who disregards all grammar, punctuation, capitalization, etc. Their spelling is usually equal to chatspeak. An illiterate roleplayer typically writes one paragraph for their intro, and around one or two sentences per post. -Note that this kind of behavior can get you banned!
*It is considered good taste to notify the Host of the roleplay when you won`t be able or willing to contribute to their roleplay for a while. | |
